The truth about GPT-5
The good, the bad, and the ugly
👋 Good morning/evening (wherever you are). It’s Thursday.
OpenAI’s GPT-5 is finally here, and they’re calling it a “team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket”.
Of course they are.
But, let’s look at this from all sides.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
The good:
First, we have to acknowledge how amazing it is that everyone will get access to the new model. Yes, even free users.

Second, it’s holding the lead against other very capable contenders, such as Grok 4 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. Notice Qwen3 in the pack, as well.

Third, there’s apparently far less hallucinations…up to 6x less from certain evals.
The bad:
Is it really SOTA if Grok 4 beats it on ARC-AGI-2?
(To be fair, GPT-5 is free)

15.9% for Grok 4 vs 9.9% for GPT-5
The ugly:
There were some confusing charts during the livestream (which Sam acknowledged).

Overall, there’s 2 things to keep in mind:
If AI advancement stopped right now, it has already changed the world forever.
AI advancement is not going to stop. It’s going to accelerate every single day.
Scary and profound, all at the same time.
OK let’s keep going ↓

EDIT: I previously posted an awesome short film, but took it down after syncing with the filmmaker because of an IMAX agreement. I’ll post it again when the time is right (2-3 weeks), thanks for understanding!
PS: If you’re passionate (and obsessed) about AI creative…guess what?! I just launched an AI creative club. It’s only $5/month. Skip the Big Mac and use it for this instead. I’m serious, you’ll thank me later. Click here to join.

🧠 Thought starters
METR just added GPT-5 to their task-length benchmark, and it shows a major jump.
GPT-5 can now complete tasks that take human experts over two hours.
That’s the longest any public model has managed so far, and it marks real progress in how long AI can work on its own without falling apart.
The trend has been doubling every seven months since 2019.
If it continues, models could be handling full week-long or even month-long projects by the end of the decade.
This is significant because…GPT-5 isn’t just smarter, it can stay focused longer, follow through, and carry more of the workload by itself.
Every day, we’re moving closer to AI that can manage entire projects without constant supervision.
