The real AI race is about reactors
Megawatts, not models
👋 Good morning. Let’s chat.
While the West argues about model architectures, China is quietly rewriting the rules of energy.
A Nature study found it costs six to ten times more to build a nuclear reactor in the U.S. than in China. The reason isn’t mysterious. China repeats proven designs, finances projects directly, and treats energy as a national priority. The U.S. starts from scratch each time, layers on new regulations, and lets momentum die in committee.

The implications for AI are enormous.
Every leap in intelligence starts with energy. Whoever builds the cheapest, cleanest power wins the right to scale.
China is doing that at speed. It’s building the grid that will feed the next generation of compute, while the U.S. still debates permits and prototypes.
The age of smart models is giving way to the age of limitless power.
OK let’s keep going ↓

💰 The numbers
OpenAI is making $13 billion a year. That’s the only number to really think about.
70% of it comes directly from consumers, not enterprise or APIs.

🧠 Thought starters
3 things to think about…
1.) OpenAI vs. Suno.
The curtain’s opening on synthetic stages and AI superstars. A model will top the charts soon, and most people won’t know the difference.
Don’t believe me? Read #2 below.
Exclusive: OpenAI is working on music-generating AI, features that could boost its rivalry with startups like Suno.

2.) AI just passed the music Turing test.
Listeners can’t tell Suno from a human anymore.
Read that again carefully.
It looks like AI music is following the same path as AI text:
1) Appears to have passed the Turing Test, people are only 50/50 in identifying older Suno vs. human songs (but 60/40 when two songs are the same genre)
2) Same fast development, new models are getting better quickly.— Ethan Mollick (@emollick)

3.) We’re in a weird stage of SEGA Genesis x Dreamcast x N64 x PS.
Once visuals stabilize, the real battle is gameplay and control.
