Tesla, Samsung sign $16.5 billion deal
Chips built for AI data centers, self-driving, and robotics
👋 Good morning/evening (wherever you are). It’s Monday.
Tesla is partnering with Samsung to produce its next-generation AI6 chip at a dedicated fab in Texas. The chip will power Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, Optimus robots, and internal data center workloads.
A dedicated fab (fabrication facility) refers to a semiconductor manufacturing plant that’s reserved or optimized for a specific client or chip.
Tesla’s AI5 chip was recently finalized and will be manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan and Arizona. Samsung already produces the current AI4 chip.
This move strengthens Tesla’s shift from automaker to AI and robotics company, with Musk personally involved in ramping up production.
Samsung’s giant new Texas fab will be dedicated to making Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip. The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate.
Samsung currently makes AI4.
TSMC will make AI5, which just finished design, initially in Taiwan and then Arizona.
