ChatGPT goes global at $5/month

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Go in India at ₹399 ($4.60) per month.

It’s the company’s most affordable subscription yet, giving users 10x more access to GPT-5, image generation, and file uploads than the free tier, plus longer memory for personalized responses.

India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, with 29 million app downloads in the past 90 days, but revenue has been modest at $3.6 million over the same period.

The new sub-$5 plan, combined with UPI payment support, is designed to convert far more of that massive user base into paying subscribers.

India now becomes the proving ground for low-cost AI subscriptions. If adoption scales, it could reset global pricing expectations and force competitors like Perplexity and Google to respond.
